Higher Quality YouTube Audio
I recently realised that many YouTube Music Videos have a hidden high quality audio track, and not just the crappy typical 128kbps .aac audio that we all hear. For something to do , I had saved a YouTube video from Dua Lipa with 128kbps .aac Audio, and from a couple of nights earlier on RAGE (ABC HDTV) where they transmit higher quality audio. I Demultiplexed them both with my Video S/W, (the Video and audio of both) with the idea of giving the higher quality looking YouTube video the better sounding Audio as well . With YouTube ,this gave me an X264 Video file that none of my S/W players will play, and the couple of MB .aac audio as a separate .aac Audio file. However, when I opened this X264 video in TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5 ,it still showed it as having Audio, despite the file being smaller after the .aac audio was removed. I then decided to convert the X264 file to BluRay format to see what came out. The results are at the links below. In many cases, the new audio may be out of Sync with the Video, ( or different ?) however, with Carly Simon-You're So Vain, for example,it was correct. However, if you just wish to obtain higher quality audio, as with some Classical Music performances, this won't be a problem. Many members will have heard the YouTube performance from SNL by Adele, so I have attached a comparison between both lots of Audio, although the Audio is WAY out of Sync with the Video in this example. If your Internet speed is slow, you may need to Download the files to play them. I finally figured out why the X264 Video and the Audio didn't align properly in most recent YouTube videos. When you look at the actual length in minutes for the clip, you will find that for some weird reason , the X264 file is exactly half the length in time, so that the actual video plays at twice normal speed with the Audio at normal speed. This means that I had to use the original YouTube video for the video side, delete the existing .aac audio and replace it with the new hidden audio, and then convert it to in this case a BluRay format stream with LPCM audio. Attached are links to an exact copy of the original Adele YouTube video, and the new BluRay version with the hidden Audio as LPCM. I was unable to find out the resolution of the hidden audio before conversion though. I decided not to optimise the Audio level in the new version in order to make the comparisons easier. One for those that enjoy earlier recordings from Norah Jones. Try comparing your CD version with this old Music Video from YouTube, created using the hidden Audio track www.dropbox.com/s/kk73pdq3v6jh4cf/Norah Jones -Come Away With Me (Hidden Audio).m2t?dl=0

A final example of just how good the Hidden Audio on some YouTube music videos can sound. If you watch any YouTube videos , you will not even need to compare this one with the normal low Bit Rate .aac Audio. It's that good !
www.dropbox.com/s/1s9xxns45x32x70/Hanine-Arabia%20%28Hidden%20Audio%29.m2t?dl=0 This Video is best downloaded and played using a player such as JRiver 26 I used the free version of WinX YouTube Downloader to download these Videos, and Pegasys Inc\TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5 to extract the hidden Audio and convert the Videos to a Blu Ray format with LPCM Audio

UPDATE. 4K Downloader (free version) See how you find the free version of this downloader. It gave me the option of .mp4 or mkv Attached is what Mastering Works 5 found when I tried to Demultiplex a couple of videos from MKV. I then multiplexed the original mp4 video with this audio, saved as 24/48 and it sounded WAY superior !!! It sounds like it may have really had that high a bitrate. This is the Audio from the 4K Downloader file www.dropbox.com/s/nxfwvag2eh7q8r7/Arabia-0x1100.wav?dl=0

Hi Alex,
I DL the Hanine-Arabia (Hidden Audio).m2t to have a listen. (I have been a bit over comparing different versions of files to be honest but this intrigues me).
My understanding is Youtube offers a higher resolution version of files if you pay for a subscription (which I do not), which also gets rid of the ads (an adblocker does this anyway). The thing is I suspect these higher res versions also are larger files.
It would make some sense that uploads are the high res/larger files and for non paying customers they only permit a cut down version/smaller size file. However it seems that *both* versions of audio are in the smaller sized download suggesting that only the video component is stripped down for non paying customers?

I also noticed with a couple of the .mkv versions that the Video was also a little sharper looking, although this may have been due to the conversion needed for the normal version.
The same may have applied to the normal audio too ?

P.S. Although the files are now much larger, I convert them to BluRay format so that I can play them directly from my Oppo 103 into my main system and TV.

Hi Alex If following (??) the newer uploaded version with 529kbs .aac audio is the regular YT download with inferior aac audio as opposed to the hidden better audio you posted earlier?

David ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "All music is folk music. I ain't never heard no horse sing a song." - - Louis Armstrong Hi David The regular YT music that you download is normally limited to a max. of 128kbs .aac audio, although you may be able to get higher quality audio to listen to if you pay for it. YouTube discourages downloading and saving of their music videos, which is why they keep changing it, with the commercial Download players needing to update their S/W often. Normally you only get the option with the various Downloaders to download either MP4 or .webm formats. These days, the 4K versions are only available in the smaller size .webm format which JRiver 26 can convert to .mp4 or ,mpeg, but only as high as 1080 video, not the original 4K . With the 4K Downloader there is also an option to also DL .mkv format, which if demultiplexed with suitable Video S/W reveals a 529kbs .aac audio stream which is possibly intended only for paid subscription YouTube. 529kbs .aac should be close to as good as it gets ,due to the higher efficiency of .aac encoding and the much higher than normal bit rate. You can also do a listening comparison in the Favourite YouTube video thread between the Lady Gaga- Joanne as posted elsewhere by C.C. and the hidden 529kbs conversion that I posted. Her voice should sound way better in the converted BluRay format video that I posted. The earlier improved versions were obtained by extracting the audio from the X264 file that was demultiplexed, and although sounding a little better, were not high res like the 529kbs stream. Regards Alex

UPDATE.Hidden Audio AND Hidden Video !!! I kept thinking the demultiplexed Video bitrate in the attached Miley Cyrus-Malibu video must have been incorrect due to the file size, but it isn't . Check out the quality of this video compared with the normal YouTube version . The normally hidden 264 file has a maximum Bitrate of 75,000kb/s ,but by itself plays at twice the normal speed , with the length of the video shown as exactly half that of the whole clip. However you need suitable video software to extract the 2 extra streams, and multiplex the extracted 264 Video with the 529kbps Audio to play them correctly . These videos can be downloaded using the freeware 4K Video Downloader , and I use TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5 for the extraction and re-multiplexing of the hidden tracks. It takes me around 6 minutes to convert those videos that are worth the trouble to a much larger file size BluRay format. You can also obtain much smaller file sizes if converting them to .mp4 again, but although the video is still higher resolution, the audio isn't quite as good as when converted to 24/48K LPCM as in the attached clip, due to the .aac format limitation of 576 kbps. It is still better than YouTubes normal 128kb/s .aac audio though. To fully appreciate just how good some of these Videos can look and sound you really need to download the attached video as the Dropbox player is quite mediocre. There is a huge amount more detail, in the shrubbery and flowers especially, and even the title is much more vivid looking. www.dropbox.com/s/0xnttyd2d3awa6i/Miley Cyrus - Malibu (Official Video).m2t?dl=0 I even found this one yesterday that had an incredible hidden video bit rate. (PID 0x0001 MPEG-4 AVC 1920x1080 119.88fps 360,000kb/s !!! )
Unfortunately, I couldn’t encode it at high enough a bit rate to retain the obvious very high res. video quality due to consumer standard video specs. I did however manage to convert it to a 4K Video of 3840 x 2160 resolution at a bit rate of >66,000kb/s which looks absolutely stunning, even on my 1080 Samsung 23" " LED" monitor . What you see directly here is pathetic in comparison. Alex
