I have found a way that appears to markedly improve the audio of many Youtube Music videos which usually use only 128kpps .aac audio
There are a huge number of Classical music performance on Youtube as well, which may sometimes be worth saving if not obtainable elsewhere, sometimes with just a Still Picture.
However, I need feedback from those who are mainly into Classical music, as to whether this results in an improvement or not, or just makes them sound different. I have also attached links to a couple of high quality Music Videos from The Lion King, one is the original YouTube video, and the other is the same one converted to LPCM audio These samples can be played directly using the Dropbox player, but for best results should be saved and played through your main system. The penalty however, is much larger size files and the need to use Video Editing S/W, although the task is automated. (TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5) All that has been done here is to take the original YouTube video with it's 128kbps .aac audio, and using Video Software convert the video to the much larger Blue Ray format with it's 48kHz LPCM audio. To save the videos to HDD/SSD to do this, I used the freeware WinX YouTube Downloader for Windows. The interesting thing here though, is that .aac audio is a LOSSY Format, and I shouldn't be able to recover the missing information by converting the audio to LPCM !
Kind Regards
Alex
P.S. You can play the Lion King videos directly from the links, but for the Classical Videos you will need to copy the links and paste them into your Browser. If you only want the improved audio for saving by this method , you can select this option with the video S/W.

Less artifacts does not mean restoration of the original information. I have found that there is music with few artifacts at 128 kbps, and other music that is unlistenable. A standard pop or large classical recording, can be ok for casual listening. in my experience, small group chamber works or simple small band acoustic playing is intolerant of the bit reduction. Two flutes, clarinets, trumpet, voices with basic acoustic accompaniment suffer from extreme digital artifacts, it sounds like they are gurgling. One of the major artifacts are the the acoustic sum and difference tones (resultant tones) do not reduce well. Although I have not played with upsampling to video formats, upsampling to higher audio formats seemed to make some of the artifacts go away, but get replaced by fog/dirt.
Alex, I will try your recordings in the next couple of days. I have a series of concerts to play and need to focus on that first.

Hi Robin Increased artifacts does not normally translate to a markedly improved soundstage though. This is a comment about an earlier example of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" from an A.S. forum sceptic " Yes, obviously better. Like another octave on the low end and half an octave on the other end just from listening. Everything in between is cleaner too. Or at least that is the impression. A good deal warmer and more enjoyable." I am more interested in this case though, as to what it does with Classical Music type material, where there is normally much less clipping and compression.
Kind Regards Alex
