Improving the performance of a PC's Internal SSD
This cheap ebay PSU Module has been verified by several members of another forum to result in a small but worthwhile Audible performance improvement when using the PC's internal +12V supply, by regulating it down to a much cleaner, and isolated, +5V supply for even the OS SSD. It is easily connected into circuit by cutting in half a 4pin molex to SATA power connector lead as shown. Even if you are unable to hear an improvement, it has quite a few other uses, not just as a very low noise (40uV) +5V supply
The output should be adjusted to +5V using a DMM before plugging it into the SSD. It is also possible to further improve the PCB by replacing the 4 bridge rectifier diodes with 1N5822 Schottky types, and the trimpot with a similar type 2kohm type for finer output voltage adjustment You can also obtain a further small amount of isolation by connecting the +12 V in to terminal 2 of A.C.IN, and 0 Volts in to pin 1 of DC-IN. www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ultra-low-Noise-40-V-Adjustable-Voltage-Regulator-Module-Based-on-LT1963/192576275337?hash=item2cd670c389:g:59EAAOSwo8hTnqYB

Thanks for this, will give it a go! Hi Mark Even if you are unable to hear a difference in your system, you won't be too much out of pocket, and this PCB can be used in various other projects. It's not quite as good in this area as my JLH PCBs though.
Kind Regards Alex

Hi Alex, thanks for the tip, I did see the JLH thread but making my own pcb and then populating it is a bridge too far for me I think for this application.

Hi,
I assume this filter will be of no use for if your SSD has SATA power connector?
Mark

Hi, I assume this filter will be of no use for if your SSD has SATA power connector? Mark Hi Mark
Provided that your SSD isn't a PCI-E version it will be usable just by finding the appropriate type of connector leads. In this case I simply cut in half a normal 4 pin Molex to SATA power connector lead worth only several $ . This is assuming that your PC has available both types of leads. Kind Regards Alex

How does it sound on a subjective level? I tried out the SOTM SATA filter in my NUC and didn't like the results at all!

How does it sound on a subjective level? I tried out the SOTM SATA filter in my NUC and didn't like the results at all! The members of A.S. forum that tried it reported a small increase in HF detail and what appeared to be an improvement in the noise floor. The problem with the original SATA filters was mainly due to the lack of larger capacitance due to the needed size of the surface mount devices used. This PSU, like the JLH has a much larger output capacitance resulting in a more balanced sound, instead of just accentuating HF detail due to a much lower output impedance at 100kHz and higher At the asking price, even if it doesn't do much in this area it makes an excellent low noise voltage regulator with other uses.

It's certainly worth trying if your music is stored on HDD, not SSD. Years ago I used a DIY C.L.C Filter to do the same.
