The playing is so fantastic - as if they knew that the Germans were marching in! A wonderful restoration. Even in Mono with space, tone and extension.
Richard Strauss: Ein Heldenleben / Tod Und Verklarung (Mengelberg) (1941-1942) Mono
Available from Naxos.
This is NOT the 1954 recording by Telefunken.

Ill put it on my list. Some of the older recordings were amazing. Not all of course but just sayin. When people take care in their craft the artists seem to come alive.

If you want to hear a recording of music with the Nazi's marching in, listen to Wanda Landowska's harpschichord, playing the Scarlatti Keyboard Sonatas, recorded in 1940 Paris. You can actually hear the bombs exploding in the background.
